A smart grid is an energy network that operates digital and other advanced technologies to monitor and manage the transportation of power from all generation sources to satisfy the unstable power needs of consumers.
However, smart grids face cyber-attack issues which are critical for network infrastructure security and customer satisfaction. Due to the cyber-attack, the power grid will struggle with operational failures and loss of synchronization.
These circumstances might damage the critical power system components and hence interrupt the power supply and make the system unstable resulting in high financial penalties.
Therefore, Smart grid security is essential to maintain stable and reliable power system operations during emergency circumstances.
Ensuring a secured smart grid concerns less possibility of power grid collapse or equipment breakdown.
Due to a lack of proper security measures, a significant blackout may occur which can even lead to a cascading failure.
Therefore, smart grid security issues must be addressed with high priority to protect this critical power system infrastructure and to ensure a reliable and uninterrupted power supply to the consumers.

This course mainly includes the following topics:

  • Overview of the cyber security principles
  • Cyber security and privacy
  • Introduction to energy and smart grid systems
  • Computation challenges in the smart grid/renewable energy
  • Distributed approaches to data processing in the grid
  • Large data sets: modeling, analysis, communication, compression, storage, and security
  • Role of ICS (industrial control systems) and SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition systems) in smart grid infrastructure
