A Comparative Performance Evaluation of Satellite Link Emulation Using NetEm, OpenSAND, and NS-3
Satellite-based Internet provides an alternative to terrestrial communication infrastructures. However, its performance is often compromised due to the wireless nature of the links and the additional challenges arising from atmospheric conditions during signal transmission. These factors result in increased propagation delays and, consequently, reduced overall efficiency. Moreover, when evaluating common transport layer protocols, particularly the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), obtaining reproducible results becomes fundamentally difficult due to the inherent variability of the satellite communication environment. We investigate the characteristics of Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite links by applying approximate bandwidth and delay parameters. Within isolated Docker‐based testbeds, we utilize NetEm, NS‐3, and OpenSAND to conduct a series of performance measurements. The results obtained from all three tools demonstrate a high degree of consistency with each other and align closely with theoretical expectations.
